Cross-training is most practiced and valued in the military, where each individual is trained to do the work of his team members. This ensures the mission will be completed even if critical members become casualties. In cybersecurity, the practice can prove valuable in avoiding disasters of different proportions. For staffing shortages, the team’s most reliable players can cross-train to become subject matter experts (SME) in new areas to backup existing staff. Finally, where weak processes are surfaced, changes can be made and the required training assigned to mitigate weaknesses and upgrade process steps.
